Title: Hidden Figures: Virginia Tech Facility Tours - Goodwin Hall + the
Terrestrial Robotics Lab
Virginia Tech's Division of Information Technology presents Hidden Figures:
Tour of Goodwin Hall + the Terrestrial Robotics Lab as part of their
celebration of Women's Month on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 which will depart
the Haymarket Theater inside the Squires Students Center on the campus of
Virginia Tech at 7:15 pm.
Goodwin Hall houses instructional and research labs and classrooms as well
as groundbreaking technology that measures even the smallest vibrations
occurring inside the building. This data will allow researchers to study
structural relations related to building design and security, occupancy
monitoring for emergency response, structural health monitoring, and more.
TREC (Terrestrial Robotics Engineering & Controls Lab, Department of
Mechanical Engineering) was founded to study cutting edge mechanics and
controls in order to create robotic platforms to change the way the world
perceives robotics - they are developing robots that can respond in
disaster response scenarios as well as in daily life. The TREC Lab is
developing one of the world’s first fire-fighting humanoid robots through
the Office of Naval Research’s Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot
(SAFFiR) program. TREC also competes in the DARPA Robotics Challenge.
Space is limited to 30 people and registration required:
https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3aezQph0ohVX3cp.
The Virginia Tech facilities tours available after the free Hidden Figures
movie screening include:
• Visionarium + Assistive Technologies Lab (Torgersen Hall)
• Goodwin Hall + the Terrestrial Robotics Lab
• Ware Lab + Hybrid Electric Vehicle Lab
All tours will depart Haymarket Theatre at 7:15 pm and required advance
registration due to limited space.
The series of events "Hidden Figures: Into the Future" will include a free
showing of the award-winning movie, with a keynote speaker and Q&A session,
followed by a variety of tours of Virginia Tech science and technology
facilities. We will also be sharing information related to college access
and majors in the STEM and data science fields.
